UGA.EDU Web Accounts (UGA webspace) FAQ

 

 

 

How do I request a website for my department/organization on the www.uga.edu server?

Any University-affiliated department or organization can request webspace on www.uga.edu:

  1. Fill out the WWW Account Request Form at http://www.eits.uga.edu/webhelp/wwwspace-f.html
  2. Click "Submit".

NOTE: This process can take up to 2-3 business days.

 

 

How do I access/upload/delete files to my department/organization webspace account?

Access to webspace on the uga.edu server requires a secure connection. SSH secure shell is provided by UGA at no cost. You can obtain a copy here:

  1. Click on the "SSH 3.1, Secure Shell Utilities for Windows " link on the website, and enter you MyID and Password
  2. Save the installation file to your Desktop
  3. Double-Click on the installation file you saved to the desktop, it should be a blue icon that says "SSH 3.1..."
  4. Use the default settings (eg keep clicking 'next' and then 'finish' until it is installed).

To use SSH Secure File Transfer to access uga.edu websites:

  1. Double click on the "SSH Secure File Transfer" icon (this is the icon that looks like a folder. It is not the "Secure Shell Client" icon)
  2. Click on "quick connect".
  3. Enter the host name "www.uga.edu" without the quotes
  4. tEnter your username and (You should have this information if you have already been granted a UGA web account). If you do not know your username and password, contact the Help Desk at 542-3106 or submit a ticket.
  5. Click "Connect".
  6. Enter your password

You will then be able to drag and drop web pages to and from you web account on the server. All web pages should be placed in the "public_html" file to be viewable by the public.

How do I change the password for my department/organization's website?

Web Account passwords must be changed every 182 days (twice a year).

If you do not know the current password for your Department's Web account, then a password change can only be done by a web account manager at EITS. Contact the Help Desk at 542-3106 or submit a ticket to request a password change for your web account.

If you know the current password for the Departmental Web Account, then it is possible to change the password by logging in to the account using the SSH Secure Shell program provided at http://sitesoft.uga.edu. Use the command "passwd" to change the password.

How much space do I have for my department/organization's website?

Currently there is no active limit or restriction on the amount web space provided to uga.edu web accounts. If a web account exceeds more than 300 MB of space then a web account administrator may put a size limitation on that account.
